Nursery General Manager (Horticulture)




To lead the strategic direction of the plant nursery to meet the 5 year plan agenda. Deliver a well-maintained and efficient nursery commensurate with the brand. Ensuring excellent quality standards and house-keeping of both in-bound and propagation/nursery grown and potted stock of Plants.

Responsible for efficient management of stock to space ensuring optimum availability. Be a key link between the nursery team, the warehouse and wholesale and plant buying teams as well as customer services and other key head office and retail stake-holders. Autonomy to drive process of continual improvement and development of the team of a Nursery Operations Manager and up to 5 departmental Managers.

Line reports: Nursery Operations and Maintenance Manager, Nursery Departmental Managers (Wholesale, Propagation, Stock control, Quality control) and Head of Maintenance. Responsible for Nursery equipment, vehicles and tools.

Key Objectives

  • Effective management of the nursery team ensuring good levels of co-operation and team-work across the departments with rapid resolution of any disputes
  • Efficient quality and goods-in processes to specification with accurate stock files updated on a timely basis
  • The highest levels of plant husbandry commensurate with the quality reputation and brand together with excellent plant hygiene and weed/pest /disease control
  • Optimised stock production, availability and rotation of stock to maximise stock availability
  • Improved net profitability through reduction in stock loss

Key Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • Good plant nursery management and propagation experience
  • Strong horticultural knowledge
  • Excellent leadership skills - able to interpret and communicate strategic vision for others
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills - able to influence effectively
  • Ability to work to time pressures in a fast moving and rapidly changing market
  • Computer Literate (Excel & Word)
  • Intermediate Level financial awareness and ability to interpret data
  • Driving Licence
